Steps for a Successful Boys State Program
The information is provided below as suggestions for an American Legion Post wishing to either establish their Boys State Program or to improve their program. These are suggestions only and not meant to dictate how a program should be conducted.
Summer/Early Fall
Appoint Boys State Post Chairman who is willing to work and get the job done.
Fall
Send Post Chairman to Fall Conference, American Legion Department of Georgia. Pick-up Boys State supplies and applications.
Before Christmas
Visit School providing brochures and any other pertinent information regarding Boys State Program. Brief appropriate school personnel about the qualifications for selection (above average scholarship, active in school and community activities, All-American appearance, and so forth). Also inform the school that you will be interviewing the qualified students provided and choosing the delegates for Boys State

January - February
Second visit to the schools. Request names of eligible students for consideration for Boys State
Secure the names of more students than you will be sending. This will provide you with students for primary and alternate delegates. There is no longer a limit to the number of delegates a post may send and you will want to have alternate delegates to replace those who, at the last minute, may decide not to attend.
No Later Than Late March
Invite all students under consideration to an orientation at the American Legion Post. Inform the student that at least one parent or guardian must also attend in order for the student to be considered for selection. Invite possible sponsors and school personnel to also attend.
It is recommended that you invite a member of the Boys State Staff or Board of Directors to assist you with the presentation to the students. The staff and Board of Directors will be happy to assist in any way possible. Contact the Director of Boys State if you need assistance in scheduling someone for your orientation.
April 1
Mail all money to Director Georgia Boys State. Monies may be submitted early.
No Later Than Late April
Interview and select primary and alternate delegates.
Have the school and the delegates complete the application (preferably type written, but READABLE printing is acceptable.) Verify the delegate's home address with the student as high schools do not always maintain accurate records.
Set a deadline with the delegates and the school for the applications to be returned to the Post Chairman
May 1
Mail all applications to Director Georgia Boys State. Early submission is encouraged.

No Later Than May 10th
Contact the delegates (primary and alternate) to refresh their commitment. Inform the delegate who their sponsor is. Make sure the delegate knows that the sponsor is paying their tuition. Get a firm commitment on participation. Also verify that the alternates are still available.
No Later Than 2 Weeks Prior to Boys State
Host the delegates (primary and alternate), parents, guardians and sponsors at a Post function (dinner, hamburgers, pizza, cook-out, etc.) Verify with the delegate departure time and place, return time and place. Stress the importance of the commitment to attend Boys State and the need for promptness. Have the delegate notify the Post now if he is not going or if he has any conflicts. Also stress to the delegates the commitment that has been made by the Post and sponsor both financially and in time. Also tell the delegates that no refund is available to the post or sponsor if the delegate does not attend. (Might also tell the delegate that he or his parent/guardian may be asked to reimburse the sponsor/post if he does not attend).
A graduation ceremony is held at Georgia Boys State on Saturday at 8:15 am. Invite the parents, guardians, sponsors and post members to attend the ceremony.
